When You Just Ain't Got It....

This page is full of ideas for things that we usually buy, but that we could make ourselves.
I am not inclined to go to the trouble of making something just for the sake of not buying it, since most things at the store are pretty darn reasonable, if you count the time that you save, however, it is good to know how to make things that we might need in a pinch, instead of running to the store.

50 Things You Should Stop Buying & Start Making

50 Things You Should Stop Buying & Start Making

As a society, we have become over-reliant on “ready made” products. We have lost the ability to make things from scratch.

Folding a Fitted Sheet

I thought this was neat because this is exactly how my mom taught me to do this, and I always fold my sheets!

An Idea Gleaned From The Lady At The Social Security Office

I know, right?
I was having a pretty awful week.
Somewhere along the way we have misplaced some very important, very small, documents.
These little blue cards are very easy to do without, for years, until you need one, and then life becomes very difficult.
So after learning from the MVA that there is no way, under any circumstances, to get any form of government ID without one, I sucked it up and went to the SSA office to apply for John's and my replacement cards. John really needs his because he needs to get his driver's permit, and he actually really needed it to present when he takes the ACT test tomorrow. We are hoping that the notarized paper that we filled out will work, but I digress.
I offered a fervent, very fervent, prayer to the Holy Spirit for the blessing of a sympathetic person to talk to. I have been there before, and have had a couple of different experiences.
When I was called, and walked down the hall, I found myself face to face with a very nice woman, who looked like she has a minivan, and takes her kids to soccer on the weekends. I felt much better.
We chatted, and I told her about the saga of my week. She was very sympathetic, and although she couldn't give me a card that day, she did give me a great idea for keeping this from ever happening again.
She said that another woman, a mom of many, came in and brought with her a binder.
It was a rather loud color, and it had many different kinds of plastic pages for collecting, and protecting, all kinds of stuff. She said that she looked at it, and immediately realized it was a genius system for keeping track of important papers. The best thing about it is that all the pages are see-through, unlike file folders, and you can almost instantly see what is in them, and what isn't.
All the cards are kept in baseball card collection pages.
The key to making sure that everything is accounted for is to take out the binder, give the required document to the person that needs to use it, and then lay the binder in a place where you can see it. Don't put the binder away until the card or document is back in it's place.
So, I came home, and found this lovely, garish, apple-green binder, and gathered all the different kinds of plastic pages that I could find in the house.
So much stuff that needs to go somewhere accessible!

Labeled, of course
Everybody has a page!

An empty envelope for times when things need to go out... and to make sure that they come back!
A section for sentimental stuff.

I got the files that I have kept down in the file cabinet forever, that I have had to go through, painfully often, and put all the papers in their proper places.
I can keep it in a safe, out of the way, yet accessible place.
Ah...I have to say, I am really glad that I had to go to the SSA that day!

Sour Cream Noodle Bake

I want to blog some of Mom's best recipes, and I thought I would start with one of the things that we loved the most when we were kids, and that Laura and Nina are now sharing with their families.

First, brown 2 pounds of ground beef, drain, and mix with one 15 oz. can of tomato sauce, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of salt.

 Boil one package egg noodles...

Mix one 15 oz. container each sour cream and cottage cheese....

 Add 5-6 chopped green onions...

 Mix well,

Then layer 1/2 the noodle mixture...

Then 1/2 the ground beef mixture...

Repeat layers, and top with shredded cheddar cheese.

Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, or if you make it ahead, refrigerate for up to three days, remove from fridge, and bake for 1 hour.

I love the feel of home and I love the business of making my home and homeschool work as smoothly and "Grace"fully as possible. I want to help preserve the art of Domesticity, with the added Blessing of Home Education.
This is the purpose of this blog. To pass along some of the things I have learned, and am learning, about organizing, about cooking, about homeschooling, about time management and other tidbits.
